The Exiled is a book talking about exiled individuals and groups. It was done during a hard time for all human beings––the pandemic was still ruining people's life, Chinese people were under strict lockdown, and the Ukraine war had just started...... The theme of this book is to give some comfort and try to find an answer for people suffering from political depression as well as myself.
The book consists of two parts. Part one is about the individuals forced out of their homeland––the poet, the woman, the activist, and the agent. And then, I look into the more extensive scale beyond an individual's destiny––tribes were once expelled, animals are losing their habitats, and human beings may be exiled from the earth one day. It is a book about experience, awareness, and empathy. To showcase the "from individuals to groups" idea, I used dos-à-dos binding to make the book, which means the two parts are connected back to back.
The design of the table of contens page also speaks to the structure of the book.
Both parts of the book start with an opening sequence of photography, one about the concept of “individual” while the other about the concept of “group”.
